Revelation Unveiled: The Reason for the Difficulty in Understanding End Time Prophecies

By Ray Carter

The myriad of contradicting interpretations of end time prophesies, especially those pertaining to the post rapture of the church period and the emergence of the anti-christ, gives pause to many Christian bible students as to what is the accurate and true interpretation of this future time.  Why are these prophesies so difficult to understand and why do so many sincere bible scholars, theologians and interpreters disagree on the meaning of the events that will occur during this period?

Daniel; the prophet whom God used to reveal the most precise prophecies concerning his people, the Israelites, of things that has occurred and will occur during this future period, provides us with the answer to this perplexing question.   Most scholars agree that Daniel was the most detailed prophet, prophesizing with such great detail and precision, that his prophesies are unparalleled in ancient times.  Daniels prophecies were so precise and accurate that many believed that Daniel lived through the prophecies that he made and wrote about them afterwards.  However, we know that this is not true.  God gave Daniel many prophecies and the interpretations of all the prophecies he made with one exception – prophesies concerning the end times.   End times prophecies were the only prophecies that perplexed Daniel.  He prophesied with great assurance about Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams and their meaning, about the handwriting on the wall and about the captivity of Jerusalem which would last for seventy years.   Parenthetically, the seventy years of captivity of Jerusalem in Babylon prefigures the seventy periods (heptads) of time that Israel would have to make an end to their transgressions and anoint the Messiah (Daniel (9:24).  This occurs at the end of the great tribulation.  Therefore, Daniel, a man highly favored and anointed by God to prophecy and interpret prophecies was prevented from understanding and interpreting the end time prophecies shown to him by God’s angelic messengers.  Why?  When Daniel asked the angel in Dan 12:8 “what will be the outcome of all that he had been shown him by the Lord”.   The angel replied in the following verse “Go thy way, Daniel because the words are sealed until the time of the end” and only the wise who live in the end time would understand (Dan 12:10b).   Therefore, end time prophecies are reveled to God’s messengers in the end times or as the prophecies become proximate to their fulfillment.

As revealed by the angel in Daniel, end times prophecies are progressive.  God unveils the understanding of these prophecies to his messengers as the time approaches for the prophecy to be realized.  The difficulty in understanding end times prophecies is not in the nature of the prophecy but in the timing for God to reveal it to His messengers.  When Isaiah prophesied about the coming messiah and King of the Jews; the people of that day, living in such great sin, didn’t understand him until Jesus marched into Jerusalem.  When Jesus prophesied about the destruction of the temple in AD70, the people of His day didn’t understand him until those alive at that time and the next generation saw the pillars being burned and destroyed by the Romans.  Isa 66:7-8 prophesied that Israel would be born in one day.  The people of that day didn’t understand this, nor even the captivity which was to come, nor its domination by many nations for over 2,900 years.   Until, on May 14, 1948, Israel won its independence and the Unites States on that same day declared Israel a sovereign nation.  Likewise, much of the post rapture time events will only be revealed to God’s messengers in proximity to the events that will occur during those times.   Scholars and theologians without the gift of prophecy would better serve the church by not proclaiming in advance the interpretation of future events before the interpretation has been revealed to God’s messengers.  This is what has led to much confusion by sincere Christian readers and interpreters of end time prophecies.  The adage “the best wine ages, don’t serve it before it’s time”, can be said for end time prophecies.

However, there are some revelation of end time’s prophecies that have already been made known to the church such as the emergence of the anti-christ and where he originates.  I will touch upon these in a subsequent blog.  Where there is the light of prophecy let us walk in that light but where there is no prophetic light let us seek not to shine our own light least we walk in darkness and many people may follow.
