Revelation Unveiled: The Beginning of the Tribulation Period – A Peace Agreement

By Ray Carter

Scripture reveals that the single event that starts the countdown for the seven year tribulation period is the signing of a covenant with Israel.  Some interpreters state this period begins immediately after the Rapture of the church.  Although this period begins after the rapture of the church, the rapture is not the event that triggers the countdown for the seven year period.  In Daniel 9, as I stated in my previous blog, God provides the prophetic timetable for the nation of Israel.  The prophetic clock began ticking when the command went out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem following its destruction by Babylon (Dan 9:25).  According to this verse Israel’s timetable was divided into 70 groups of 7 years – a total of 490 years.   The Greek word for these seven year periods is heptad.  This word is used in the original Greek Bible which is what the New Testament was first written in.  The first 69 heptads or 483 years counts the years from the going out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem to the coming of the anointed one, a prince (Jesus Christ).  When Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem to proclaim Himself Israel’s Messiah, it was 483 days to the day which has been verified by chronologist and bible scholars.  Then, Daniel describes a gap between the end of the 69th heptad and the beginning of the 70th heptad (last seven year period) in Dan 9:26.  Several events would take place during this gap.  The Messiah would be killed, the city of Jerusalem and its temple would be destroyed and the Jews would encounter difficulty and hardship onward until they anointed the Christ at His second coming.  Also, which was hidden from Daniels view, was the mystery of the creation of the Church during this gap period which will thrive until it is removed at the rapture.

The final Heptad

The final heptad (seven years) will begin for Israel when the antichrist confirms a covenant with Israel for seven years (Dan 9:27).  The signing of this peace agreement will signal the beginning of the tribulation period – a seven year countdown to the second return of Jesus Christ.  For many who surrender to Jesus Christ and survive through the tribulation period they will know when the end of the great tribulation that is in the world will end by virtue of the seven year countdown from the signing of the peace pact.  This is exactly what was prefigured by the seventy years of captivity of Israel by the Babylonians when Daniel came to understand the prophecy that was revealed to Jeremiah of the seventy years captivity of Jerusalem (Dan 9:2).  When Jesus stated in Matt 24:22 “ that except those days be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elects sake those days shall be shortened”, He announced this abbreviated period of seven years of great distress in the world for the primary purpose of turning God’s chosen people Israel back to Him.

The Day of the Lord

The antichrist’s signing of a peace agreement with Israel not only constitutes the beginning of the tribulation period but also the beginning of the day of the Lord.  The term the day of the Lord is used in several senses in Scripture.  The OT prophets sometimes used it to describe an event that would be fulfilled in the near future.  At other times, they used it to refer to an event in the distant eschatological future (tribulation period).  In both cases the day of the Lord is characterized by God supernaturally intervening in the world order to bring about judgment against the sins of the world.  The day of the Lord is a time in which God actively and personally controls and dominates history in a direct way instead of working through men and secondary causes.  We see this when God destroyed the world by flood in Noah’s day; when God sent fire and brimstone down from the heavens to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of the wickedness of those cities, when God visited the plagues upon Egypt to bring about the freedom of His chosen people.  Once again, God will not use an agent to handle things in the tribulation period, He will handle things personally and directly himself.   When God has to deal with mankind directly and personally, it is never a good experience and something supernaturally is going to happen.  Saints, aren’t we thankful and count it joy that the God deals with us through his agents of grace and mercy?  Because if we were chastised for our transgressions at the hand of God directly it would be more than any of us could bear.  Thank you Lord for salvation!
